Even under normal circumstances, a visit to the doctor’s office or stay in the hospital can be a nerve-racking and anxiety-producing experience. Receiving medical treatment in the age of coronavirus, when healthcare workers are wearing personal protection equipment (PPE): medical gowns, medical gloves, N95 respirators, face shields, can be unsettling.
A San Diego respiratory therapist found a creative solution to this problem by wearing a giant, laminated picture of himself smiling. “A reassuring smile makes a big different to a scared patient,” he said.
And the best news…the trend caught on to other health care providers who want to help their patients feel more comfortable during an uncomfortable situation.
